I grew up in southern New Jersey, very, very close to the Atlantic Ocean, near Atlantic City, and spent most of my youth in that area. I attended the University of Delaware, where I obtained degrees in Journalism and Photography.
Now I live in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, with my wife and big doofus dog, and work as a technical writer. If you aren’t sure what technical writing is, think of it this way: I write the manuals that you look for when you can’t figure out what to do next. In my case, I write guides that tell you how to use software.
It is very dry and very dull work, but it has taught me to be economical with my words and how to explain complex topics clearly. These are invaluable skills to have, especially in my books, where the details make the difference.
Tech writing taught me one other thing – to write every day, no matter what. While I have days when the words won’t flow, I manage to get something down on paper. Those days stink, but when it all comes together and my fingers can’t keep up with the ideas coming out of my head, the feeling is indescribable.
I tried to write books for such a long time, and I failed so many times that I figured I didn’t have the skills, determination, or luck I needed. A few years ago, as the manuscript I was working on was grinding to a halt like all the others, I had an epiphany – my characters tell me what they are going to do, not the other way around. When I try to force them into actions or decisions, they rebel. When I let them be themselves, they are a part of great stories. Wouldst that I couldst have figured this out 25 years ago!
But we all move forward, not back. Now, in addition to Love at Point Blank Range, I’ve also crafted Kensie’s Treasures. Both were well received and reviewed by those who read them, making me think I might just be not so bad at this. Maximum Range: Perfect Shot is my third novel, and I think you’ll like it.
